We scored nothing with invented numbers. Instead, every tool is described against the same seven criteria, because these are the questions that decide which one fits you:

Best for: iPhone owners who want one app on Mac or Windows plus an iPhone app that works unplugged, with routes, a joystick and GPX, and a real daily free allowance. Geovo changes an iPhone's GPS from a computer over USB, or from the iPhone itself on Wi-Fi, cellular or in Airplane Mode once set up.

Pros - Mac (Apple Silicon and Intel, with Apple Maps built in) and Windows 10/11. - iPhone app that works with nothing plugged in, via the free LocalDevVPN helper. - Teleport by map or search, routes along roads at walking, cycling or driving speed, joystick, GPX import and export, favorites, recents and schedules. - Return to Real Location is always one tap away. - Locations never leave your devices; no tracking or analytics. - Free for 30 minutes every day with every feature. Pro works on 2 computers and 2 iPhones.

Cons - The iPhone app is installed with your own Apple ID and must be renewed from the computer every 7 days (Apple's rule for free Apple IDs). - Not notarized yet: the Mac asks you to click Open Anyway once; Windows shows SmartScreen's Run anyway, and needs iTunes from apple.com for Apple's driver. - iPhone only: no iPad or Android support. - It changes GPS only, not your IP address. Made by an independent developer, so it's a younger product than some here.

Vanish

Best for: people who want an on-phone app that renews itself, or who use an iPad. Vanish works much like Geovo: Mac and Windows apps plus Vanish Mobile on the iPhone.

• Pros: its site says Vanish Mobile renews itself from inside the app; lists iPad support (iOS/iPadOS 17.4+); routes, scheduling, bookmarks, history and a killswitch; lifetime $84.99 with Mobile.
• Cons: joystick and GPX not listed; with Mobile, $5.99/week is billed every two weeks, $12.99/month, $74.99/year; free-plan limits not listed on the homepage.

Tenorshare iAnyGo

Best for: people who need iPhone and Android in one tool, and want multi-stop routes. iAnyGo runs on Windows and Mac and lists iOS, iPadOS and Android support.

• Pros: multi-spot routes with up to 99 points, a 360° joystick and keyboard control, GPX import and export; an iOS app installed from the computer can then be used on the iPhone directly; a 30-day money-back guarantee.
• Cons: its FAQ says the location stays changed after you close the computer app and that you restart the device to get your real location back; iOS/Android apps sit in the pricier cross-platform bundle ($24.95/month to $129.95 lifetime); privacy and renewal details not listed.

iMyFone AnyTo

Best for: households or teams covering several iPhones and Android phones from one licence. AnyTo lists teleport, two-spot, multi-spot and joystick modes, speeds from 3.6 to 120 km/h and GPX import and export.

• Pros: its VIP plans cover unlimited PCs/Macs plus 5 iOS/Android devices (10 on SVIP); iGo, an app for using it on one iPhone without a computer, comes with SVIP; 30-day money-back guarantee.
• Cons: prices on its store change with limited-time offers ("from $14.99" on the product page); the free trial limits teleport use and joystick time; its listed macOS range stops at macOS 14; privacy details not listed.

3uTools (Virtual Location)

Best for: occasionally setting one fixed point, if you already use 3uTools to manage your iPhone. 3uTools is an all-in-one iPhone manager for Windows and Mac; Virtual Location is one tool in its Toolbox.

• Pros: free download with no paid plan listed; set a point by latitude and longitude; "Restore true location" or a reboot undoes it.
• Cons: a single point rather than routes or a joystick; its tutorial says the screen must stay unlocked during the change and warns it may cause an error in Maps; no on-phone mode listed.

Xcode

Best for: iOS developers testing their own app. Apple's free Xcode can simulate a location or replay GPX waypoints while your app runs from Xcode, and inside tests.
